TRAGEDY AT THE OLYMPICS - Did NBC go too far?

NBC is in the doghouse again with their viewers and peers. This time for choosing to show the unfortunate death of Georgian luger, Nodar Kumaritashvili, age 21. (I hear ABC AND CBS showed it afterwards also.)

My husband saw it accidentally without warning while channel surfing. Thinking it was stock video of Kumaritashvili competing, hubby watched in shock the gruesome crash. I know Hubby can watch some upsetting stuff; he was shaken a little from this one.

I’m sure because he is so young, there is not much written about the life of Nodar Kumaritashvili. But in his memory for a world that will never know him:

Born November 22, 1988 in the Borjomi region of Georgia. The Kumaritashvili family made their home in the nearby ski resort Bakuriani. He came from a family of lugers: father Dato and cousin Felix who was his coach and head of the Georgian Luge Association. Those close called him soft-spoken and shy but had a life’s dream of being an Olympian. Nodor, always an athlete, started to competed in 2008-2009 Luge season. He completed in 10 World Cups overall. He is ranked 44th out the 65 competitors for the 2009-10 season and finished 28th in his last World Cup January 2010.

Nodar is survived by his mother, father and sister and is to be buried in his hometown. Local officials in Bakuriani, have stated that a new luge track will be named after him where an annual competition will be held in his honor.
